Knowing that it was only months ago that he referred to her as “so cute,” I asked what the problem was.

“She’s just…too much. I mean, she looks like a kindergartener.”

At the time, she was wearing a little blue dress with a peter pan collar. In fact, the same dress I was wearing at that moment. I pointed this out.

“Well it’s different, you have that jacket on. It makes it different.”

I had been wearing a schoolboy jacket over the dress, which I bought in the boys’ section of Saks. The jacket, not the dress. And the outlet, not Saks proper. I bought it for reasons that mostly relate to being mad that J.Crew was charging $200 for their version.

And also, because I’m an accessories cross-dresser.

Let me explain.

I’m pretty girly. Need proof? Here is my photo from the beach.

See? Girly.

Would you guess that my favorite perfume was technically a men’s cologne? It’s the Thymes Eucalyptus cologne. That started out as a reminder of my boyfriend, then just grew to be something I loved. It’s a clean, woodsy and just a touch lemon-y. In other words, something far, far, away from the hyper-sweet lady perfumes currently polluting the air at Sephora. See also: Old Spice Cologne. I know it’s really for men, but I find the old-timey scent a comfort in these uncertain times.

Then there’s also the question of quality. My favorite workbag is from Fossil’s men’s collection. This has lasted me about six years, which is far longer than any purse (regularly used) has lasted. My theory is that designers subscribe to the belief that men will only buy one work bag and therefore save the good leather for them. Or something like that.

Another thing: men’s white shirts. They are far better than lady shirts, if we are talking about button-downs. I tend to go for the “vintage” look, so I knot mine at the waist. The material is far better than anything I can find that’s made specifically for women. Nowadays, those white-button downs in the lady section are all see-through. Can anyone explain that? The same goes for scarves — for men, they use actual wool (hello J.Crew), for ladies, leftover cotton candy.

While we’re at it, I’m going to add the aforementioned boy blazers to my list of things for men that are actually better for women. The ever-so-slightly oversized jacket is the charming antidote to power blazers that make all of us look like Hilary Banks from the Fresh Prince of Bel-Air. And again, the fabric is always so much better. There’s no reason NOT to buy all your blazers from the boys’ department of your favorite store. You can always get it tailored.

And a final note: men’s watches. For some reason, they always have numerals, whereas lady watches have tiny inscrutable faces with a few devil-may-care lines. Do you know what time it is, with a watch like that? I never do. So I continue to use my Timex Weekender, replacing the strap when necessary.

So in short, men’s accessories will A. prevent you from looking like a crazed Zooey Deschanel wannabe, and B. will probably save you money by lasting longer because they’re not made of clever marketing and fairy dust. I see no other compelling argument.

Cut 25, which is located at 129 Grand Street, isn’t the only high-end shop in the neighborhood. Azrouel explained, “I love Soho, it still represents the real artists in New York. It’s very trendy, and fun and it is always in style. Even all the big luxury brands, like Stella McCartney just opened here, you have like Jil Sander, Derek Lam, Opening Ceremony, so many more.”

“Trendy” and “fun” are two excellent words to describe the neighborhood, and the pieces in Azrouel’s Cut 25 line: “I felt like the contemporary market was missing something,” the Israeli American designer explained, “There wasn’t anything with that heat, that’s sexy, but also cool and chic at the same time. It’s artistic, in a way. Effortless, you know?”

We do know. And so does Azrouel. As an attractive, straight man working as a designer in the New York fashion industry, he has quite a unique perspective on the way women should dress. “I love women, so for me it makes a difference.
it’s not about a dream for me, it’s about the reality when I think about what a woman wants to wear. The way I want to see a woman is what I design.” Looking out at the crowded store, past the stretchy mini-dresses and cropped t-shirts, Azrouel explained his sexy designs, “How confident women are, is what makes the clothes sexy. It’s not what they wear. It’s how you wear the clothes. I think that a woman who is very confident can wear anything. You can see a beautiful woman, but if she’s not confident about herself it doesn’t matter what she puts on.”

Azrouel, who has been with his girlfriend for over a year, may just be the perfect boyfriend (think of all the free clothes!), but he may find himself in the doghouse: “I’ve been bad, I have been working like crazy. I definitely have to do something for Valentine’s Day.” He does have an excuse, however, as Valentine’s Day inconveniently takes place during New York Fashion Week. “I am just working crazy hours,” he explained, “like a machine. I saw my full collection yesterday, and I couldn’t believe it. You have to enjoy the work. If you don’t enjoy it, then that’s not what its about.”

Following fashion week, Azrouel has plans to go surfing, “I have been surfing all my life, I learned when I was 6-years-old,” but that doesn’t mean he will be taking it easy. When asked whether or not the busy designer would expand his empire further and pursue a mass retail collaboration a la Jason Wu or Karl Lagerfeld, “I’d think about it. Why not?”

So when Miller appeared at Juicy Couture’s Madison Avenue location Thursday evening to celebrate the brand’s new DIY charm collection, I was eager ask her about 2012 trends, the most stylish astrological signs and what the universe says about Dior.

Which sign has the best fashion sense?

The signs that care the most about fashion are Leo and Libra. Libra is often the arbiter of taste. You find them a lot as editors, but you find the ones who correct your copy to be Virgo.

What does 2012 have in store for fashion?

Accessories are going to explode in the second half, because Jupiter’s in Gemini. Gemini gets bored, so they have to keep changing up things. The first half though, until June 11, is Jupiter in Taurus and that’s beautiful fashion, gorgeous fabric, investment dressing. Lots of neutral pieces that you can use with your color. It’s almost like the structure and the bones of your wardrobe and then you add more on. And with Uranus in Aries, we’re moving away from the sparkles. It’s going more toward the messenger bag, the khaki, olive and navy, the safari jackets, that kind of casual chic.

Who will take the reins at Dior?

You know, I’ve thought about that so much. Alber Elbaz at Lanvin is a Gemini, and he’s going to do so well. I thought he would be great. He’s a hard, hard worker. I saw a piece on him on “60 Minutes,” and I would like to know more about him. I think he needs a little bit of rest. Galliano might have been just a little tired and in need of a break. He’s a Sagittarius and Sagittarius is generally not at all prejudiced. They’re very eclectic. So, it had to have been an aberration.

Any Oscar predictions?

I have to tell you, the Oscars are taking place on February 26th, and that is the luckiest day of the month. It’s going to be a joyous evening. Brad Pitt is up for it and “The Artist” is up for it. George Clooney is a Taurus. And right now, Taurus wears the crown. He has to give it up in June, but right now he can do absolutely no wrong. So I think [George Clooney] will get something, but it’s really hard to say. It should be one of the best award cermemonies ever — I think they’ll pick the right people.

Does your daughter, Sophomore designer Chrissie Miller, get her style sense from you?

Oh, she has her own. Even her grandma, my mom, said “Chrissie has her own little way — she puts things together so creatively.” She’s a Pisces, born February 26th. Even when she was in high school, she’d go to vintage stores and mix it up. She always knows where the trends are going. She calls and says “Okay, we have to shoot our look book. Here are the days; pick a day.” She uses astrology.

In my business, color is paramount, and anytime anyone — celebrity or mere mortal — walks a red carpet, both physically and symbolically, it’s a big deal.

Throughout time, red carpets served as the transition of the gods, the threshold device for moving ordinary people into an extraordinary world. For countless significant weddings, including the recent marriage of Prince William and Catherine Middleton, couples walk a long red carpet to the foot of their first moment together as husband and wife.

Also, for most of the world’s nations, their leaders roll out the official red carpet for VIP guests attending their State dinners. When hosting foreign dignitaries, the president and Mrs. Obama spread out America’s official red carpet, which also includes travel on Air Force One. And prior to air travel, in the early days of railroad, dapper conductors opened a plush, vivid red carpet, directing passengers from their common world onto the magic chariot of the rails.

First, some history: I first saw mention of a red carpet in the play Agamemnon, written by Aeschylus in 458 BC. Aeschylus’s wife, Clytemnestra, welcomed the warrior home from Troy with a red carpet, saying, “Now my beloved, step down from your chariot, and let not your foot, my lord, touch the Earth. Servants, let there be spread before the house he never expected to see, where Justice leads him in, a crimson path.” Agamemnon, not feeling worthy, responds, “I am a mortal, a man; I cannot trample upon these tinted splendors without fear thrown in my path.” I’ll bet George Clooney and Steven Spielberg won’t feel that way when they enter the Kodak Theatre in Hollywood.

In Renaissance paintings, dazzling red carpets line the steps to thrones, a very clear symbol that sets kings and rulers apart from their constituents. Cardinal red lifts the heart with spiritual power and enhances fame and reputation. At the Oscars, Hollywood’s elite must walk a red carpet, because no other color signifies the same power, style, confidence, or good fortune as the color red. Can you imagine someone trying to buck the tradition of the red carpet? How would you or the celebrities feel walking down a yellow, brown, or blue carpet in front of millions of people? Certainly not as regal or important as a long stroll down a radiant red carpet, that’s for sure.

Red is also the color of the first chakra, the access point in the body to your personal power, grounding your roots firmly to the earth. Walking a red carpet facilitates the absorption power through your feet, bringing all the earth’s forces up into your body. The only way the red carpet experience could get any better is walking in your bare feet.

Just a few years ago, my husband, Robbie, working at the Oscars, with client and uber chef, Wolfgang Puck, got an excited call from daughter, Molly, on his cell phone. “Daddy, daddy, daddy, I see you on the Red Carpet wearing your pink shirt! Can you wave to me?” He did, and that was the extent of our family’s red carpet moment. But believe me, we’ve never forgotten the thrill.

Celebrities and notables must wait for a special event to walk publicly on a red carpet, yet I counsel my clients, both famous and not so famous alike, that to support their own path to greatness they should consider placing a red carpet at the entry way to their home or office. Every soul is uplifted by walking a red carpet, because, as it says in Psalms 82:6, “…You are gods; you are all children of the Most High.”

Here are my 2012 Oscar predictions: I love War Horse for best picture. It’s a classic, grand film, in the spirit of Gone with the Wind and National Velvet. For best actor, I don’t care who wins as long as it’s George Clooney. And for best actress, my vote goes to Meryl Streep, a genuinely noble, amazing and beautiful woman.

Yet even before the show inside begins, we’ll be glued to one of the more famous red carpets in the world, watching ordinary humans (and possibly a horse), take that long, proud walk down the crimson path, in the hopes that they, too, will soon emerge a winner.

This eclectic mix of designer and non-designer vintage clothing and accessories caught my discerning eye because of its uniqueness, contemporary feel and highly collectible nature.

While Rihanna is no stranger to lighter locks — recently sporting a blond pixie wig for an Armani Jeans ad campaign and an angled bob in her “You Da One” video — she reassured her Twitter followers that she had colored her hair for real this time, saying: “lol! I dyed it for #ELLE…bleach + weave #WERQ.”

Later that night, she was spotted courtside at a basketball game between the Denver Nuggets and the Los Angeles Clippers showing off that shag, which channels Tina Turner during her “Private Dancer” era.
